Oh, Look: Geese!

Oh, look!
We have an expression around our house: Oh, look: Geese! I uttered those immortal words as Lloyd was driving me to a physical therapy appointment one crisp, cold winter day--a number of years ago now. It was right after my first knee operation, and that was my reaction to seeing a flock of geese standing in the Word of Life Lutheran Church grounds. Lloyd looked at me and said "Ok, it's official. You've been cooped up way too long if seeing a flock of geese excites you that much!" He was right: I had a huge case of cabin fever.

Nice to look at...from a distance.
To this day we point from our car and say: Oh look, geese. We're quite clever, we are.

Geese, of course, are nice to look at but have personalities like a rabid pit bull. There's a pair of them by the Naperville Post Office and they stand on the sidewalk, block your way, stretch out their wings, and hiss. I think Lloyd's younger daughter had the right response to a sassy goose: "Nice mouth!"

Ok, enough back story. Here's the Dieter connection. Lloyd was walking Dieter near Word of Life and noticed a flock of geese. Some were in the road, blocking traffic, and the rest were holding two women at bay. Having a ready-made goose deterrent device at the end of his leash, Lloyd walked Dieter over toward the fracas. Dieter was quite calm and just ambled along, but the geese were not so calm when they saw a German Shepherd coming toward them. "Is that the time? Wow, we've gotta fly."

No geese in my backyard!
And off they went. Dieter did the usual awe-struck look he has when something flies away from him. "Cool! Wish I could do that."

The women thanked Lloyd and Dieter and everyone continued on their merry way.

Just another day in the life of the Dynamic Duo.
